Hah! Fooled you!
You thought this was going to be a "2008 recap feat. 2009 well-wishes" post, didn't you?

Well, you were wrong!

This is a standard "OMG! I haven't updated my LJ in over a week!" message. These are not-so-subtly different.

This vacation to the family estate (that's not really an estate) has been filled with things like:
* cooking family recipes
* going out with friends (or over to friends, or to potlucks with some people I might know)
* making nice with my mother's friends
* not enough shopping

Yet, there isn't very much to relate.

Top stories:

1 - Was baking at friends' place (who sent a significant other out to pick me up because I didn't have a car; I told him I didn't want to be an imposition, and he was all, "They want you here. I'm coming to get you.") and got the compliment, "You're hot, Janine." Apparently, they've been describing me as the "hot" out-of-state friend that various people haven't met yet. Much amusement followed my perceived overreaction to such a compliment (i.e., hugging everyone who said "Janine, you're hot.").

... no one has ever described me as hot. When I get compliments they're usually for intelligence, geekery, knowledge, or fashion sense. Hot???? Never in my life. I immediately had to go and hug the complimenter.

I also got seriously invited to a threesome. Everyone (including the inviters) knew I would never accept, but it was still flattering to get the invitation. A bit odd (how often does that happen to people?), but flattering.

2 - Made family tomato sauce. Yay! Need to finish sorting out my apartment in Seattle so that I can have a real number of people over for dinner. Soon.

3 - Watching season 1 of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Did you know that it's a kids' show? I didn't before, but yay! Soooo much fun. The parents and I finished the season last night. I have serious questions about that episode with the Uvodni and will happily discuss them with anyone who asks. More likely, I'll just think about writing a fanfic for the poor guys still fighting off somewhere, but then never get around to writing it.

4 - Still chatting with various people on OkCupid. It's losing its shine, though, because I've now answered so many personality questions that answering more (even 100 more) doesn't change my results appreciably. Hmmmm.

5 - Yep. I still love my family. **hugs to the parents**

Yeah, yeah. 2008:

* Had lots of fun with lots of friends in Long Beach. Tried to find job; wrote 1/3 of my tacky, unfinished romance novel.

* Found job and moved to Seattle where I have a ridiculously large number of friends -- already built-in as well as new.

* Played Maid of Honor in HS friend's wedding. Men wore kilts; I wore emerald green. Gave slightly inappropriate toast.

* Lost job, got new job.

* Escaped from Snowpocalypse in time to come home for holidays.

Happy 2009!

Thank you! If you were next to me, I'd give you a massive hug for that.

... I wasn't fishing for this compliment or anything, y'know. It's just that no one ever says that about me, which made it worth mentioning (and being excited about).

Perhaps people don't say it because it is so pain-stakingly obvious that it seems redundant to point it out.

Flatterer!

See, I believed it from these other people, but you (and Pat and the rest of my LJ friends) have had plenty of chances to make the observation and never did.

I mean, it wasn't a straight up compliment from nowhere. This was the casual, everyday mention like it's just a fact of life: "our hot, out-of-state friend, Janine...." followed by me going, "Wait! Did you just call me hot?" Followed by, "Janine, you're very definitely hot".

Bob got Season 2 of the Sarah Jane show. I'm always hesitant to dig in, but once we're there we have to finish it all at once.

BTW, I love the tie-in between the end of SJ and the most recent season ender of Dr. Who...

Yay! Sarah Jane is awesome. I love it. Also, that tie-in with SJ, Torchwood, and Dr. Who was definitely awesome. I haven't seen any Torchwood, but that didn't matter at all.

Yay!, some more.

Gads, woman! Never seen Torchwood? You absolutely positively must get your fix on that. If nothing else, it will make Jack's response to Sarah Jane make a lot more sense...

On a side note, why are all the heroes "Captain Jack"? :)

Ah, SJA is a fun show. From what I've seen of Old Who, it is more like the old, original Doctor Who, than the current series is.

Y'know, that's exactly what my parents and I said as we were watching it!

So I'm not the only one who thinks that? Yay!

I mean not that I mind NuWho, but I think there is just an eansy bit much placed on the sexual tension between The Doctor and the Companion nowadays. The Doctor is less of an eccentric genius, and more of mysterious angsty young hot man, something that IMHO should have been changed, but I doubt will be happening soon.
